Rocky Balbao and the battles I face - Ali Jawad, GB Paralympic Powerlifter

Published on: 26th April, 2021

"Sometimes it's not about the medals, it's about looking yourself in the mirror and being satisfied you never gave up against some incredible odds." Ali Jawad 2021

So here's the final push towards Tokyo qualification. Ali is a multiple medal winner in powerlifting. But his Crohn's Disease has severely affected his lifting since the Rio Games.

Ali freely admits he's not the lifter he was. So qualification is tough. He's got two World Cups to choose from to try and make it. One in Georgia and a second in Dubai. Ali will probably have to choose just one to go to and also negotiate the Covid restrictions along the way.

We talk Rocky - the films and music are all part of Ali's preparations.

Thanks for listening - and I'd love it if you'd give the series a follow.

About the Podcast

Destination Tokyo
Olympic and Paralympic stories in the run up to the Tokyo Games.
I’ve covered 5 Olympic and 5 Paralympic Games at home and abroad. Tokyo 2020 was to have been numbers 6. So how are the athletes preparing during Covid times. And what are they learning in the run up to the Games. The Podcast lasts around 10 mins and comes out daily, Monday to Friday. I’m also using it to raise money for Maggie’s Cancer Centres to thank them for the help they’ve given my wife and family during her bowel cancer journey.
