What it means to be an Olympian. 100 days to go with badminton pair Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith

Published on: 14th April, 2021

With 100 days to go to the Tokyo Olympics it's a return of two of Destination Tokyo's regular contributors. So who are Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith? They're GB's top ranked mixed double badminton pair.

Marcus Ellis made his Olympic debut in Rio in 2016 and won a surprise bronze medal in badminton's mens doubles. Lauren Smith also made it to her first Games at the same time. The pair talk about what it means to be an Olympian and to stand on the podium.

Marcus and Lauren are very close to sealing their spot in the mixed doubles - which will be very special, as since Rio they've become partners both on and off the court.

They're about to head to the longest ever tour away from home - going to the Ukraine, India and Malaysia as the truncated Olympic qualifying period comes to an end.

And we share our love of chocolate brownies!

About the Podcast

Destination Tokyo
Olympic and Paralympic stories in the run up to the Tokyo Games.
I’ve covered 5 Olympic and 5 Paralympic Games at home and abroad. Tokyo 2020 was to have been numbers 6. So how are the athletes preparing during Covid times. And what are they learning in the run up to the Games. The Podcast lasts around 10 mins and comes out daily, Monday to Friday. I’m also using it to raise money for Maggie’s Cancer Centres to thank them for the help they’ve given my wife and family during her bowel cancer journey.
